What is the circulation driving force for natural circulation industrial boilers?

29 Sep 2023

Natural circulation refers to the spontaneous movement of fluid (typically water and steam) in a circuit, driven by density differences resulting from temperature variations. When a fluid is heated, it becomes less dense and tends to rise. Conversely, when it cools, it becomes denser and tends to fall. This phenomenon sets up a natural convective flow without the need for external pumping mechanisms.

What is a natural circulation industrial boiler?

A natural circulation industrial boiler utilizes the principle of natural circulation to circulate water through the boiler. In such a system:

Water in the boiler is heated and transforms into steam.

The less dense steam rises, while the denser, cooler water descends.

This creates a natural loop: water flows from the steam drum through downcomers to the bottom of the boiler, gets heated in the riser tubes, and rises back to the steam drum.

The process continuously cycles, driven purely by temperature-induced density differences.

This contrasts with forced circulation boilers, where pumps are used to circulate water through the system.

The circulation driving force for natural circulation industrial boilers is primarily the density difference between the hot and cold fluids, typically water and steam. Here's how it works:

1. Density Difference: When water is heated in the boiler's riser tubes or sections, it becomes less dense and tends to rise due to buoyancy. Conversely, the cooler, denser water in the downcomer tubes or sections tends to sink.

2. Thermosiphoning: This natural movement due to density differences is based on the principle of thermosiphoning. It establishes a natural circulation loop: water from the drum or the top section flows down through downcomers to the bottom part of the boiler, where it gets heated and then rises through the riser sections back to the top.

3. No External Pumps Needed: The beauty of natural circulation boilers is that this circulation occurs without the need for any external pumps. The inherent density differences drive the flow, ensuring that water continuously circulates and gets evenly heated.

This natural circulation process ensures that there is a steady supply of water moving through the heat-absorbing sections of the boiler, preventing overheating and providing efficient heat transfer for steam generation.
