Why Does Starvation Occur in a Steam Boiler? | ZOZEN FAQ
Steam boilers are an essential part of many industrial processes, but they can be susceptible to a phenomenon known as starvation. This occurs when the boiler does not receive enough water to generate steam, which can cause serious damage and even lead to explosions.
There are several reasons why starvation can occur in steam boilers. One common cause is a low water level, which can be caused by a malfunctioning feedwater pump or a leak in the system. Another cause is an uneven distribution of water, which can be caused by a blocked or partially closed valve.
Main reasons for water shortage in the steam starvation boiler:
(1) The operators are negligent and lax in monitoring the water level;
(2) After the boiler blowdown, the blowdown valve is not closed and locked, or the blowdown valve leaks;
(3) Failure of water supply equipment or water supply pipeline reduces or interrupts water supply;
(4) The water level meter steam and water pipes are blocked, and the cock leaks or other reasons form a false water level;
(5) Blasting of boiler water wall, convection tube bundle, economizer tube or flue pipe to release water vapor.
Treatment method of steam starvation in the steam boiler:
(1) If the water level is just lower than the normal water level, but it can still be seen, water supply and flushing water level gauge should be strengthened to restore the normal water level.
(2) Check the water supply, water supply and other systems for damage and water leakage. In severe cases, stop the furnace for treatment.
(3) When the water level can't be seen after the "water-calling method" and the flushing water level gauge are adopted, a serious water shortage accident may occur, and the boiler should be stopped immediately and quickly turned off to find out the reason.
To prevent starvation in steam boilers, it's important to regularly check and maintain the feedwater pump and other components of the system. Additionally, the water level should be monitored carefully to ensure it remains at a safe level. If starvation does occur, it's important to shut down the boiler immediately and investigate the cause to prevent future incidents.
