How to control the water level in the steam drum during the boiler startup process?

10 Mar 2023

It is necessary to control the water level in the steam drum during the boiler startup process to ensure the safe operation of the boiler and effectively utilize the thermal energy conversion efficiency. The water level in the steam drum directly affects the safety of the boiler operation. If the water level is too high, it may cause the boiler to overheat, the furnace to deform, and even cause explosion accidents. If the water level is too low, it may expose the heating surface to the air, which can cause problems such as burning out and high-temperature oxidation, threatening the service life and safety of the boiler. Additionally, controlling the water level in the steam drum can also improve the thermal energy conversion efficiency of the boiler by maintaining the appropriate water and steam mixture.

There are several common methods to control the water level in the steam drum during the boiler startup process:

1. Open the feedwater pump: Before starting the boiler, the feedwater pump should be opened to inject enough water into the boiler to ensure normal water level operation.

2. Start the steam drum blowdown system: During boiler startup, the water level in the steam drum will rise, and it is necessary to release some water in a timely manner. This can be achieved by starting the steam drum blowdown system. By releasing an appropriate amount of water, the water level in the steam drum can be maintained within the normal range.

3. Adjust the feedwater flow rate: During boiler operation, the feedwater flow rate can be adjusted as needed to control the water level in the steam drum. If the water level is too high, the feedwater flow rate can be increased; if the water level is too low, the feedwater flow rate can be decreased.

4. Install a water level gauge: Installing a water level gauge in the boiler can provide real-time monitoring of the water level in the steam drum, allowing for timely adjustments. Water level gauges may include magnetic flap type, capacitance type, ultrasonic type, and other types.

It is important to note that during the boiler startup process, control parameters should be adjusted in a timely manner to ensure that the water level in the steam drum remains within a safe range. Additionally, regular inspections and maintenance of the boiler are necessary to ensure proper operation.
