When water is vaporized in a limited space, the opposite process of vaporization occurs at the same time, that is, the liquefaction process. When the number of molecules flying out of the liquid during vaporization is equal to the number of molecules returning to the liquid during liquefaction from the vapor space, the vapor and water are in equilibrium. This state is called saturation state. Water in a saturated state is called "saturated water". The steam produced by saturation is called "saturated steam". That is, saturated steam refers to the steam in equilibrium with the liquid, which is formed from the liquid. The temperature of saturated steam varies with the pressure of the liquid.

Wet saturated steam and dry saturated steam

The steam obtained when the liquid has not completely vaporized is called wet saturated steam. The wet saturated steam is a mixture of some of the smallest water droplets of steam and boiling water. That is to say, steam still contains water. The steam coming out of the water surface of the boiler drum is wet saturated steam.

When all the liquid is vaporized, the steam obtained is called dry saturated steam. Steam separated from steam and water in boiler drum can be regarded as dry saturated steam. Under a certain pressure, the temperature of dry saturated steam and wet saturated steam is equal, which is equal to the boiling point of water at that pressure.

The steam produced by the boiler is often not dry steam, but wet steam containing some water molecules that have not completely evaporated. The heat loss of heat radiation causes some steam to condense, so the wet steam will be wetter, and form condensed water. Therefore, a steam trap must be installed at an appropriate part of the pipeline to discharge the condensed water.
