What causes the burner motor of the gas-fired boiler not running?

24 Nov 2023

If the burner motor of a gas-fired boiler is not running, several issues could be at play. Diagnosing the problem involves checking various components and systems. Here are some common causes:

Electrical Issues: Check if there's an electrical supply to the motor. A tripped circuit breaker, blown fuse, or loose wiring could interrupt power supply to the motor.

Faulty Motor: The motor itself could be malfunctioning. Over time, motors can wear out or burn out due to electrical issues or mechanical failures.

Thermostat Problems: If the thermostat is not sending the correct signal to the boiler, the burner motor won't activate. Ensure the thermostat is set correctly and functioning.

Control Board Issues: The control board orchestrates the operation of various components. A faulty control board might not send the necessary signals to start the motor.

Safety Lockout: Gas boilers have built-in safety mechanisms. If the system is in a lockout state due to a previous fault, it will prevent the burner motor from running. Resetting the boiler might be necessary.

Pressure Switch Fault: If the boiler pressure is too low or too high, safety switches will prevent the burner motor from starting. Check the pressure gauge and ensure it's within the recommended range.

Overheating Protection: If the boiler previously overheated, a safety device might have tripped to prevent further operation. This needs to be reset or addressed by a technician.

Airflow Issues: If there is insufficient airflow for combustion (due to blocked vents, for example), safety systems may prevent the burner from starting.

Fuel Supply Issues: For the burner to operate, there needs to be an adequate supply of gas. Check for any issues with the gas supply line, such as closed valves or leaks.

Thermal Overload Protection: Some motors have built-in thermal overload protection that shuts down the motor if it overheats. Once it cools down, it may need to be manually reset.

Capacitor Problems: If the motor has a start or run capacitor, this component might be failing. Capacitors provide the necessary starting torque and running efficiency for the motor.

Regular Maintenance: Lack of maintenance can lead to several problems, including motor failure. Regular maintenance helps identify and resolve such issues before they lead to a breakdown.

If the motor isn’t running and the cause is not immediately apparent, it’s advisable to contact a qualified technician to diagnose and repair the boiler. Working on gas boilers, especially electrical and mechanical components, requires specific expertise and safety knowledge.
