A fossil fuel fired boiler is a boiler which burns a fossil fuel, such as coal, oil or gas, to produce steam or hot water.

In a travelling grate boiler, coal is fed at one end of a moving steel chain grate. As grate moves along the length of the boiler furnace, the coal burns before it falls on the other end as ash.
