How to prevent your boiler from freezing up?

12 Oct 2019

If your boiler equipment freezes, you can expect a shutdown and significant loss of productivity. Winter can be tough on your boiler system. The experts at ZOZEN Boiler weigh in on what you can do to prevent your industrial boiler from freezing up.

Be Vigilant About Your Boiler's Pipes
The biggest threats to the safety and proper maintenance of your boiler during cold winter months are your boiler's pipes. Since boiler systems constantly contain water, there is an opportunity for a frozen boiler to wreak havoc. In condensing boilers, water tends to collect in the condensing pipes. Check these pipes and all others before the cold sets in to make sure they are properly insulated. The right kind of insulation will go far in preventing a frozen boiler and put off damage to your pipes.

Check in On Key Performance Measures
Keeping a close eye on standard performance measures and metrics is even more important when you are trying to avoid a frozen boiler. Indicators like operating pressure and temperature, water levels, and low water cutoff need to be checked every single day. Older boilers tend to lose more pressure over time, so you'll want to check in to ensure that you haven't lost any power. If you tend to keep your boiler turned off through the warmer months, you'll want to make sure you turn it on at least once a day to make sure it doesn't seize up. 10–15 minutes should do the trick—you don't want to find out there is an issue with your system too late into the year.

Schedule an Assessment From a Professional
So much of boiler maintenance is preventative and can help you and your company avoid costly repairs, replacements, and shutdowns before it is too late. If you are wary of your boiler freezing during winter weather, schedule an appointment with a boiler service professional who can make sure your equipment is ready for cold temperatures.
