Building a Plywood Plant in Africa: How to Choose the Right Heat Source?

24 Mar 2026

For many manufacturers with mature production experience in China, expanding capacity overseas or building a new factory abroad often starts with one key question: can the local infrastructure and energy supply support long-term operation? This is especially important in Africa. In many countries, raw materials such as timber are readily available, while conventional fuels like natural gas and diesel are often more expensive and less stable in supply. For plywood plants, this creates a practical challenge, because critical processes such as veneer drying and hot pressing depend on a stable steam supply.

Turning Wood Waste into Usable Energy

Turning Wood Waste into Usable Energy

If a newly built overseas factory continues to rely on conventional oil- or gas-fired equipment, fuel costs can quickly become a burden on daily operation. So how can an investor build a steam system that is cost-effective, reliable and manageable in a new market? A recent project in Côte d’Ivoire offers a practical example. For a large local plywood plant, ZOZEN Boiler supplied a 6 tph SZL series biomass steam boiler, helping the customer establish a steam solution suited to local conditions.

Côte d’Ivoire is rich in forestry resources and remains an important timber processing and export market in West Africa. From the early planning stage, the plywood plant made it clear that its energy strategy would focus on local sourcing and operating cost control.

In daily plywood production, the factory generates a large amount of by-products, including bark, wood scraps and sawdust. These materials are often treated as production waste, but in fact they can serve as biomass fuel with usable calorific value.

Using these wood residues as boiler fuel can reduce waste disposal pressure while lowering steam generation costs. Based on this requirement, the project team searched globally for a boiler supplier with overseas delivery experience and eventually chose ZOZEN Boiler. After evaluating the customer’s fuel conditions, ZOZEN recommended the SZL series biomass steam boiler, which is suitable for a wide range of biomass fuels.

Designed Around the Characteristics of Biomass Fuel

Designed Around the Characteristics of Biomass Fuel

Compared with processed biomass pellets, loose wood waste from plywood production is more difficult to burn in a stable way. Its moisture content is uneven, its shape is irregular, and its calorific value can fluctuate. In ordinary boilers, these characteristics may lead to incomplete combustion, grate operation problems and ash accumulation on heating surfaces.

To support long-term operation at the Côte d’Ivoire site, ZOZEN carried out targeted design optimization on this 6 tph SZL series biomass steam boiler.

Customized grate system

Based on the actual size and combustion behavior of local wood waste, ZOZEN adjusted the grate structure, air distribution and running speed. This helps the fuel move and burn more evenly inside the furnace, improving burnout performance.

Rational furnace design

The SZL series biomass steam boiler adopts a large furnace chamber combined with a well-arranged secondary air system. This design extends the residence time of high-temperature flue gas in the furnace and supports more complete heat release. The boiler achieves a thermal efficiency of over 86%.

Anti-ash accumulation design

Biomass fuels tend to generate more fly ash during combustion. To address this, ZOZEN optimized the spacing of the convection heating surfaces and flue gas passage, and equipped the boiler with a corresponding soot-cleaning arrangement. This helps reduce ash buildup and maintain heat transfer performance during operation.

A Delivery Approach Better Suited to Overseas Projects

A Delivery Approach Better Suited to Overseas Projects

For overseas factory construction, installation is often another major concern. In some markets, experienced local boiler installation teams are limited. If too much welding and assembly work must be completed on site, the project schedule can be affected and installation costs may rise.

With years of export project experience, ZOZEN adopted a combined quick-installation and modular assembly approach for this SZL series biomass steam boiler. The upper boiler body and lower grate section were completed and assembled in advance at ZOZEN’s 150,000-square-meter manufacturing base in China.

After arriving at the project site in Côte d’Ivoire, the boiler only required final alignment of the upper and lower sections, along with connection to water, electricity and related piping before commissioning could begin. This delivery method reduced the amount of on-site installation work and supported the plywood plant’s planned startup schedule.

ZOZEN Boiler Supports Overseas Industrial Steam Projects

For companies planning to build factories in Africa or other overseas markets, the choice of heat source equipment should not be based only on boiler capacity. Fuel availability, operating cost, installation conditions and long-term maintenance all need to be considered together.

In this Côte d’Ivoire plywood project, the 6 tph SZL series biomass steam boiler provided by ZOZEN Boiler matched the plant’s fuel conditions and production needs, while also easing pressure on installation and operation. It shows how a biomass steam boiler can become a practical option for wood-processing factories looking to improve energy utilization and control fuel costs in overseas projects.

If you are planning a plywood plant, wood processing facility or other industrial steam project overseas, ZOZEN Boiler can provide boiler selection support based on fuel type, process demand and site conditions.
